The Marks Of A Good Basketball Coach
There are a few things that every basketball coach should remember, and these things are of vital importance in helping him become a good coach for his players.
Winning is not the Most Important Thing To many coaches, the game is all about who can win. Winning is not the most important thing, but players doing their best is what makes a game good. Winning a game doesn’t help a player improve, but only by playing his best will he become a better player.
Tough, but Even Handed The best coaches are those who are firm in their discipline, run more Basketball Drills than the players would like, but are fair when it comes down to it. A good coach will be stern and firm, but still good to the players. Be willing to lay it all out to the players like a basketball play, but always help them find the way to improve instead of putting them down.
Motivate your team to do their best. If you do not motivate your players, then they are only as good as those that shoot hoops in their spare time. Those players that have made it to the top, and the best Basketball Plays that have ever been played, have been successful because of the effect of motivation. Only the players that have been properly motivated will play the best game and those coaches who use motivation as a religion will lead their team into triumphs.
Not just Sports, but Life Basketball drills, basketball plays, and new techniques in the basketball playbook are all important lessons to learn, but life lessons are far more important for the young players to learn. Coaches should help their players by imparting valuable life lessons to them, such as lessons on dedication, perseverance, honesty, integrity, and the ability to never give in.
Working as a team. There are those poor coaches who just focus on a single player’s strengths, and superstars are born from it. But a superstar is nothing without the support of his team. The good coaches teach the invaluable lesson of working together as a team, thus resulting in an unbeatable dream team. Take the Chicago Bulls for instance. Thanks to Michael Jordan, Scotty Pippen, and other superstars they were the best team around town. But it wasn’t only because of their skills that brought them there. It was their coach’s instilling of the vital fact of working together as a team that allowed them to win six championships in eight years.
Favoritism is bad. Good coaches focus on the strengths of all team members and not just a select one or two. A good coach knows a team works better when all pulling together. Do not raise your voice or use force to scare your players into doing things. That will only cause anger between the team members and possibly case dismemberment.
Encourage your players to do their best and give positive encouragement rather than negative criticism. Help them to feel that they accomplished something at the end of a game.
